Scholarly Commentary
IntroductionÂ
The sonnet is a vigorous and coarse reponse to Dante's equally coarse and and ad hominem sonnet taunting Forese. See the commentary for the latter. DGR's source text was Luigi Fiacchi's Scelta di Rime Antiche (page 14).
Textual History: CompositionÂ
Probably a later translation, perhaps 1860.
Printing HistoryÂ
The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted unaltered in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
