Introduction

The translation stays quite close to DGR's source text, Poeti del Primo Secolo (II. 76-78). As that text is quite corrupt, however, DGR reproduces its metrical irregularities. The poem is there assigned to Amorozzo da Firenze but DGR clearly knew—from what source is not certain—that the more likely author was Carnino Ghiberti, who died sometime after 1280. Carnino and his family were Guelph merchants from Santa Maria Alberighi.

The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
