DGR opened his long letter from Paris to his brother (18 October 1849) with this very polemical sonnet declaming against art works in the Louvre that, in his view, failed miserably to exhibit the spiritual and artistic standards of the PRB.
The sonnet was probably written on 18 October. The other poems included in the letter would have been composed sometime during the week before.
