Early Italian Poets text
Scholarly Commentary
IntroductionÂ
Little is known of this poet other than that he was a Florentine. DGR's source textâwhich is clearly corrupt in the first stanzaâis Poeti del primo secolo (I. 225-226). The translation is close in its imitation of the metrical features of the original but fairly free in other respects.
Textual History: CompositionÂ
The translation is probably an early work, from the late 40s or early 50s.
Printing HistoryÂ
The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
