Scholarly Commentary
IntroductionÂ
As DGR's note indicates, Dante's sonnet is closely related to the poems of praise in the Vita Nuova. The note underscores the centrality of Dante's autobiography to DGR's selection of translations.
The source text for DGR's translation was Fraticelli's Opere Minori di Dante Alighieri (I. 143).
DGR projected (but did not execute) a picture to accompany this sonnet.
Textual History: RevisionÂ
Probably an early translation, late 1840s.
Printing HistoryÂ
The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
