Scholarly Commentary
IntroductionÂ
DGR gave the sonnet two distinct textual environments: as the thirteenth sonnet in the 1881 âHouse of Lifeâ sequence; and as the second of a three-sonnet triptych that he titled âLove and Lossâ and gave to Jane Morris, apparently in 1871. In the latter it is titled âLove's Antiphonyâ.
Textual History: CompositionÂ
Four holograph manuscripts of the sonnet come down to us. The earliest is the corrected draft gathered in the Troxell composite âHouse of Lifeâ sequence, where its initial title, âThe Symphonyâ, is cancelled. From this derives the fair copy in the âLove and Lossâ triptych and the fair copy gathered into the âKelmscott Love Sonnetsâ sequence. In these manuscripts the poem is titled âLove's Antiphonyâ. The copy in the Fitzwilliam composite âHouse of Lifeâ sequence is in the hand of May Morris and descends from DGR's fair copy now in the Bancroft Museum library. One of the latter was printer's copy for the 1881 publication.
