The Early Italian Poets Text
Scholarly Commentary
IntroductionÂ
DGR's source text, Raccolta di Rime Antiche Toscane (II. 154), lacks line 11, and DGR seems to have simply invented what he thought might be appropriate in context (see his manuscript copy of the original poem). His invention, sad to say, is not up to Cecco's âched ella sia un terren paradisoâ, which is the received text.
The translation is fairly close, except at the end of the octave and, of course, in the case of the missing line.
For further general information about Cecco and his work see the commentary for âDante Alighieri, Cecco, your good friendâ).
Textual History: CompositionÂ
Probably an early translation, late 1840s.
Printing HistoryÂ
The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
