IntroductionÂ
This essay is probably by Annie Scott Hill (1837-1902) and William Fulford (1831-1882) ( Wellesley Index 731). Annie Scott Hill was the wife of George Birkbeck Hill (1835-1903), who knew Fulford at Oxford ( Dictionary of National Biography ).
Primarily a character sketch of Timon and a summary of the plot of the play, this essay is the second in a series of three essays in The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine about Shakespeareâs less popular plays. The other two discuss Troilus and Cressida and Twelfth Night, respectively. Cormell Priceâs essay on Shakespeareâs minor poetry is relevant here as well.
