When Coventry Patmore was asked to
contribute to the first issue of The Germ, he sent
âThe Seasonsâ on condition
that his name be withheld until the
appearance of his next volume. (See Fredeman, The P.R.B. Journal, entry for 25 September
1849). DGR apparently
copied the poem in a letter to his brother and wrote âStunning, isn't
it?â. The poem was reprinted in Tamerton Church
Tower (1854), and in Patmore's
collected Poems (1886) in revised form under
the title âThe Yearâ.
