IntroductionÂ
Surtees describes the work as: âIllustration to the play by Matthew Gregory Lewis. On the castle ramparts two young men stand armed for battle; on the left a third holds a spear. Palm trees in the background, and a standard inscribed âConway Castleââ (Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné, vol. 1, 1 (no. 2) ). WMR calls it a âcoloured designâ, and notes that it comprises two subjects, the first, Percy and Motley and the other, Osmond and Kenrick (see WMR, Family Letters, vol. 1, 86.). Surtees is probably refering to Percy and Motley, while Osmond and Kenrick is contained in the Fredeman Cabinet series of drawings.
