Almost nothing is known of this drawing, including its date of completion. Surtees notes that, “After the Rossetti Sale, Mrs. Rossetti Angeli, as a child, was allowed by her father, W. M. Rossetti, to choose a small drawing from her uncle's unsold work. She chose this drawing” ( Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné, vol. 1, 125 ).
