Introduction
âRossetti had first met the poet in London in the summer of 1851. . . . In the autumn of 1855 during their stay in London, Rossetti had hoped to paint the portraits of Browning and his wife, but this did not prove practicable, and the present water-colour drawing, begun in London and finished a few weeks later in Paris, was all that materializedâ (Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné , vol. 1, 159 (no. 275)).
