Introduction

Red chalk drawing was one of DGR's characteristic media for finished portrait work. This work has been aptly described as “an outstanding piece of deliquescent draughtsmanship” (see Wildman, Visions of Love and Life, 264 ). See also commentary for the Tate Gallery's pencil drawing.
