Introduction

Although the title of the drawing is adopted from the first stanza of Elizabeth Barrett's “The Romaunt of Margret” , the picture does not illustrate that ballad, which is set outdoors beside a river. (See also the commentary for the drawing executed two years earlier to illustrate the ballad.)
