Subject: The scene is at the crucifixion of Jesus. DGR has taken the text of John 19: 25 as his point of departure. The four women are the Virgin, her mother, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

Introduction

The picture seems closely related to the finished pencil drawing done at about the same time, The Virgin Mary Being Comforted. DGR made another version later, in 1857-1858, St. John Comforting the Virgin at the Foot of the Cross.
