Introduction

WMR notes that Valpy arranged for DGR to do this chalk portrait of “the daughter of a lady residing at Shirley Hall, Tunbridge” ( DGR. Designer and Writer, 288 (no. 365) ). WMR says the picture was completed in May but on 28 April DGR wrote to Watts-Dunton that “I finished Miss W.'s head today from her” ( Fredeman, Correspondence, 79. 56 ).
