IntroductionÂ
DGR wrote to his mother on 7 July 1843 that âThere have been two meetings of the sketching club since your departure, for which I have made three drawings, one of which was the death of Marmion, and the other two were of the same subjectâviz., the old Soldier relating his battles to the Parson, from âThe Deserted Villageââ (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 43. 2 ). Scott's poetry and fiction were great favorites with DGR, Goldsmith less so.
PictorialÂ
The surviving sketch is inscribed by DGR at the botttom âClara & de Wilton on the ramparts. Marmion Canto 6.â
