Death of Marmion

DGR wrote to his mother on 7 July 1843 that “There have been two meetings of the sketching club since your departure, for which I have made three drawings, one of which was the death of Marmion, and the other two were of the same subject—viz., the old Soldier relating his battles to the Parson, from ‘The Deserted Village’” (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 43. 2 ). Scott's poetry and fiction were great favorites with DGR, Goldsmith less so.

The surviving sketch is inscribed by DGR at the botttom “Clara & de Wilton on the ramparts. Marmion Canto 6.”
